Sea Eagle Facts

SEA EAGLE

Today a sea eagle came to our school. It was three years old and had brown eyes and it also tried to get out of his master’s hand but the sea eagle had straps around it called jesses. The sea eagle also did a poop. It had about one hundred feathers on him he was a baby/ adult called a juvenile because he was half and half. The sea eagle usually flies at around 15/20 mph. But when it is diving down from high distance it goes at about 50/ 70 mph.

The falconer had to take the sea eagle away because it was going to be filmed.

THE SEA EAGLE

Sea eagles can live up to thirty to forty years. When they are sixteen weeks old they leave their mums nest for the first time to go and find food. When the eagles get to three years old they are just about two years from being an adult. Three year old sea eagles still have their baby looks. When they are adults they get much lighter plumage on their heads and necks.  They also lose the dark colour on their legs and beaks.

WHAT THE SEA EAGLE EATS

Sea eagles eat small things like rabbits. Sea eagles also eat fish. They dive with their feet in the water first and then take the fish out of the water and use their beak for a knife and their feet for a fork. The sea eagle chicks will also eat their own sister or brother if they are low on food.

THE SEA EAGLE

The sea eagle eats things like rabbits, fish and other big and little prey. The sea eagle is a huge bird and could obviously eat a lot more than smaller birds. It rises up in the air and looks for its food and then dives down to catch it.

The White-tailed Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is much larger than the Buzzard. It has a short wedge-shaped tail, which is white in pale-headed adults, and brown in an immature juvenile. Its shape when soaring is similar to a vulture. It feeds on land and in water and is found on rocky cliffs or near inland waters in E. Europe. It usually has a large territory over which it hunts and it remains faithful to its mate as long as he/she is alive.

Nest

A sea eagle’s nest is the size of three small tables put together. It has to be that big because the eggs are much bigger than a chicken’s egg. It also has to be big because the eagles are not small.

The nest is made of sticks, mud, moss and feathers. They use sticks and mud because it makes it strong. If the nest wasn’t strong the parents of the eggs would break it. The feathers and moss make it soft for the chicks when they come out of the egg.

The nest is made by both the parents they  take about one day to build it. I would think that it would take ages to build a nest that big but it only takes one day. The reason why the birds only take one day to build a nest is because they are such big birds and can carry heavy loads and they can fly long distances.

Height and weight

The Sea Eagle is around 18 inches tall. A full sized male Sea Eagle’s wingspan is about 7 or 8 feet wide. A full sized female’s wingspan is 8 or 9 feet. The male weighs just over 3 kilos.

Captivity

The Sea Eagles were taken into captivity because they were extinct in this country. People took them into captivity to breed them, then they let the young go free.

The Sea Eagle’s Senses

A  Sea eagle can  see much better than people .  People don’t know if eagles can see under water. Its sense of smell is about the same as a human. Its can hear well, probably better than humans.
