Working Parties
Work started again in the Wildlife garden on Thursday 18th April. Steve Hardy kindly came in to school to help the children plant some trees along the fence and also in the pond and nursery area. These trees were very kindly donated to us by Mr Donald Kennedy. They are a mixture of native species and hopefully in future years they will help to form a windbreak for the garden as well as being a habitat for various types of wildlife.
Also included in the thumbnails below are some pictures of the birds that are visiting our bird table. Mrs Russell has been keeping the peanuts topped up and as the bird table is directly in front of her classroom window, the children have been observing the birds, identifying them and then going on to research them. They seem to be really enjoying this and we hope to set up a data base of the birds that visit our garden.
So far the children have identified the ubiquitous chaffinch, siskin, bullfinch and goldfinch. (I haven't yet managed to get photos of all the various kinds!)

Friday 19th April turned out to be a glorious day! Mrs Russell brought in a whole load of plants for the garden (she'd been growing them on in her greenhouse over the winter) and the whole school spent the afternoon in weeding the beds and planting! I think we can safely say that everyone was thoroughly engrossed in working and they co-operated extremely well with each other, big ones helping little ones etc. They are a very willing group of children and it makes it a pleasure for us to work with them. Well done to everyone and thank you for all your effort.
Tuesday 23rd April saw us in the garden once again. The little ones planted some more plants in the beds, once again supplied by Mrs Russell! Then they joined in with some of the older children who were helping Steve Hardy plant some more of our native species hedge. The older children then went on to plant flag iris rhizomes around the pond area while my class had great fun spotting tadpoles!
